Custom Upholstery FAQs

Have questions about custom upholstery? You’re in the right place! Explore our FAQ section below to learn more about fabric selection, pricing, and what to expect when customizing your perfect piece.

Fabric

How does fabric grade impact pricing?

A fabrics grade reflects the labor required to manufacture a specific fabric, and takes into consideration the percentage of natural materials used and/or special treatments used during the manufacturing process.

Fabrics with a single letter grade (Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Y, Z) represent the low to mid-range fabric options, with Q being the lowest, and therefore reflecting the lowest pricing.

Fabrics with a double letter grade (AA, CC, HH, MM, NN, OO) often have intricate weaves, a higher percentage of natural materials, or specific durability treatments applied to them in the manufacturing process. These fabrics will reflect higher pricing, with OO being the most expensive.

Does fabric grade reflect it's durability?

Not necessarily! Fabric is graded based on elements such as material type, weave complexity, and special finishes. While most high-durability performance fabrics will be a higher grade, natural fibers like 100% cotton or linen will also be graded higher due to the labor required in the manufacturing process, despite having lower durability.

How do I stay within my budget and still get the look that I want?

Ask an associate to point out some low to mid-grade fabrics. For example, if you’re looking for linen or velvet, Rowe offers a great selection of blended fibers that provide the same stylish look without the higher price tag of 100% natural fibers!

Where can I browse fabric swatches?

Leather

What are the different types of leathers?

When shopping for leather furniture, you'll often notice the following terms:

FULL GRAIN: leathers that have not been corrected in any way, allowing the natural markings and character of the leather to show through. Full grain leathers are richer, cleaner hides to begin with (having minimal scars, etc.) which also make them more expensive than corrected grain leathers.

TOP GRAIN: made from the entire grain layer of the hide and often retains the natural imperfections and markings of the animal's skin, but can be buffed or sanded to minimize imperfections in the hide (these are often called “corrected grain” leathers).

GENUINE LEATHER: also known as split leather. These leathers are made from the layers of hide that remain after the top grain has been separated, which makes it less expensive than full-grain or top-grain leather. Often treated or coated to improve its appearance.

BONDED LEATHER: the lowest grade of leather, made from scraps and fibers that are bonded together with a polyurethane or latex backing. It's the least durable but most affordable option.

What type of leather is the most kid-friendly?

Full-grain leathers are the most durable and long-lasting, followed by top-grain, and then genuine or bonded leather.

Rowe Furniture also offers a collection of kid-proof, protected leathers that resist stains and scratches, making them a great option for high-traffic areas or homes with children and/or pets.

Where is the leather from?

Leather is imported from tanneries around the world, primarily European countries because of their quality standards and environmentally responsible practices.

How is leather graded?

Leather is graded based on the overall quality of the hide (how many imperfections are present), the origin country, and the labor required in the finishing process.

Most manufactures rank leather grades in the following descending order in terms of durability and authenticity: full-grain leather, top-grain leather, split leather, and bonded leather.

Furniture Care

How do I care for my upholstered furniture?

Protect your furniture from direct sunlight, excessive humidity, and dryness. Vacuum the surface of your furniture regularly, including the deck under the cushions, with the upholstery attachments of your vacuum cleaner.

Loose cushions should be flipped and rotated frequently to minimize soiling and add to the longevity of your upholstery.

To successfully clean fabric, it is important to determine the type of fabric and the recommended cleaning code. The cleaning code for your upholstery can be found on the law tag attached to the furniture underneath the seat cushion. Once you identify your fabric’s cleaning code, please visit our Upholstery Care page for further instructions.

How do I care for my leather furniture?

With proper care, quality leather can be expected to last an average person’s lifetime.

  • A monthly wiping with a warm, damp cloth will prevent your body oils and dust from creating a buildup. As easy as it sounds, this maintenance is key to prolonging the life of your leather furniture.
  • Do not use saddle soap oils, abrasive cleaners, soaps, furniture polish, varnish, or ammonia-based products. The leather has already been permanently preserved in the tanning process and needs no maintenance other than the simple cleaning recommended.
  • In the case of deep cleaning or conditioning, you should use leather-specific cleaners and conditioners. These products are specially designed for this purpose and will not affect the structure of the leather. Recommended 2 to 3 times a year.

When using any leather cleaners or conditioners, always spot test an inconspicuous area.
